About Dr Sara Sexton (Child & Adult Psychologist)
Dr Sara Sexton is one of our experienced Child & Adult Psychologists at Newcastle Psychologist & Counselling, offering therapy for children, adults, and family therapy in Newcastle.
Sara provides counselling and therapy for a wide range of issues, from bereavement and physical health difficulties to complex family problems. She has particular expertise in working with children and young people experiencing challenges such as self-harm, anger, behavioural difficulties, school-related issues, and attachment difficulties.
She also works extensively with adults struggling with anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, confidence issues, and difficulties adjusting to life changes. In addition, Sara supports parents, adoptive families, and foster carers in navigating the challenges of family life.
Experienced Counselling Psychologist
Sara completed her Doctorate in Counselling Psychology in 2009 and has over 13 years of experience working in both the NHS and private practice.
She has worked within Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), NHS Health Psychology services, and with looked-after children, where she developed a strong interest in supporting families, adoptive parents, and foster carers.
Alongside her clinical work, Sara has experience lecturing and delivering training for parenting skills, reflecting her commitment to developing others’ skills in supporting children and families through complex emotional and psychological challenges.
Sara also provides clinical supervision to other therapists and psychologists, helping to support and develop their practice.
Psychologist for Children & Adults
Sara’s approach to therapy is integrative, drawing on a range of therapeutic models to best meet the needs of each client. She believes strongly in the importance of a safe, supportive therapeutic relationship as the foundation for growth and recovery.
Her specialist areas include working with trauma, including childhood sexual abuse (CSA) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), using a range of evidence-based approaches such as Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), psychodynamic therapy, and family-based interventions.
In addition to structured therapeutic approaches, she values the role of practices such as meditation and breathwork in promoting overall wellbeing and resilience.
Sara’s style is compassionate and collaborative, creating a safe space for both children and adults to explore their difficulties, build new coping strategies, and work towards meaningful change.
Therapeutic Approach
Sara has a keen interest in psychoanalytic psychotherapy, which first inspired her to pursue a career in psychology. She continues to explore ways of integrating both traditional and contemporary therapeutic methods into her work.
She is also particularly interested in how mindfulness, meditation, and breathwork can support emotional regulation and enhance wellbeing in everyday life.
