Counselling for People with Autism

Stressed Young Man Biting His Nails

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Asperger’s Syndrome are neurodiverse conditions that can impact on a person’s life in a number of ways.

Though often thought of as being a “social disability” where people have difficulty reading others or relating with people, autism is a spectrum and can also include patterns such as rigid thinking, difficulty with breaking from routine, and difficulty with managing emotions.

At Newcastle Psychologist & Counselling, our team of Psychologists, Therapists and Counsellors offer specialist counselling services for people with autism, acknowledging the distinct needs and strengths of each person on the spectrum.

Please note, we do not offer Autism or ADHD assessments.

Common Struggles with ASD

As a spectrum disorder, the pattern and characteristics of autism varies widely among people, leading to a diverse array of strengths, difficulties and challenges in day to day life.

People with Autism may face a number of difficulties, such as:

  • Social interaction and communication difficulties
  • Sensory sensitivities leading to feeling overloaded
  • Repetitive and routine behaviours and narrow interests
  • Struggles with forming and maintaining relationships
  • Challenges in emotional understanding and expression
  • Problems with emotional regulation and coping with emotions
  • Difficulty coping with transitions and change
  • Struggles in planning, problem solving and organisation
  • Anxiety and mood-related issues.

A number of our Psychologists, Counsellors & Specialist Therapists at Newcastle Psychologist & Counselling are specially trained and experienced in counselling people with autism (both adults and children) and understand how these difficulties can impact on your life.

We therefore offer structured therapies, or ad-hoc counselling, to help you overcome difficulties that the condition may bring, as well as to help deal with the emotional effects that can come from living with autism.

Counselling for People with Autism in Newcastle

At Newcastle Psychologist & Counselling, we work collaboratively with clients to identify and address specific challenges associated with ASD and how it affects their life (both positively, and negatively).

Depending on your specific challenges, different approaches might be helpful in supporting you with your goals and helping you manage the difficulties you are experiencing.

Strategies from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused Therapy, Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT), as well as general counselling approaches might be offered to help you develop strategies and tools to help you achieve your goals and overcome your challenges  (whether relating to anger, managing anxiety, developing social skills, enhancing communication abilities or working through other problems).

By focusing your individual goals and aspirations, our counselling aim to help you navigate the intricacies of daily life with confidence and resilience, and even at times using some of your ASD traits as a strength that might help you perform even better than others.
