About Dr Samuel Hughes (Clinical Psychologist)

Dr Smauel Hughes is one of the Clinical Psychologists here at Newcastle Psychologist & Counselling. He specialises in working with those experiencing intrusive thoughts and/or OCD to overcome their issues.

Samuel has experience utilising a range of approaches within his therapeutic practice, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Couples & Family Therapy, Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Narrative Therapy.

In addition to this, he also has significant experience in using Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) to help people experiencing low self-esteem, and people struggling with perfectionism or imposter syndrome.

Experience and Therapeutic Approaches

With several years of experience, Samuel has worked within the NHS’s complex care services, before completing his DClinPsy in 2022. Here, he developed a specialist interest in working with those experiencing intrusive thoughts and OCD to manage their symptoms and find a way forwards.

His core therapeutic approach is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), which he offers within his practice, in addition to Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT), Couples & Family Therapy, and Narrative Therapy.

Samuel is also currently undertaking Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy training, and is set to become fully qualified in this approach in May 2024. During this time, he will be working as an EMDR therapist-in training, offering the therapy to individuals with trauma & PTSD.

Compassionate Clinical Psychologist

Samuel has a strong desire to make the world a better place, by using his compassionate skills in many different ways.

Since his teenage years, Samuel has spent time raising money for those experiencing hardship -whether financial, or through ill health – to improve their lives. He has set up his own fundraising group to do this, through which he has been able to help many people.

This experience shows through in his work as a clinical psychologist, which demands therapists to be kind, warm, caring and reflective. Luckily for Samuel, the two worlds of psychology and charity have collided to create a career that he loves and is proud of.
