About Kathleen Whelan (Couples Counsellor)
Kathleen Whelan is one of our couples counsellors at Newcastle Psychologist & Counselling. She is also trained in offering psychotherapy for adults, adolescents and children aged 6+.
With an array of knowledge and clinical experience, Kathleen primarily offers couples counselling and relationship therapy in Newcastle, and is also able to offer counselling within the context of the relationship for those experiencing issues such as trauma and PTSD, bereavement, anxiety, stress & work stress, depression, and more.
Kathleen focuses on working through difficulties within the relationship with clients, offering each person a safe space to explore their difficulties and improve their relationship.
Experienced Psychotherapist and Couples Counsellor
Kathleen’s initial work in counselling began with her training in 2010 whilst employed as a Bereavement Service Lead Manager for a local children’s bereavement charity.
This role involved working closely with bereaved children and their families who were finding it hard to envisage a future without their loved ones, with Kathleen helping them to move forward following their loss.
Since qualifying as a counsellor in 2016, Kathleen has amassed a wealth of experience in counselling, also completing an MA in Counselling & Psychotherapy, as well as specialist training in Couples Counselling.
Culturally Sensitive Couples Counselling
Kathleen professes to being a lifelong learner with a curious mind, having travelled the globe in her 20s whilst working for a reputable airline for six years as a cabin crew member before training as a psychotherapist and couples counsellor in Newcastle.
She is culturally sensitive to those from all backgrounds, having worked with those from different cultures and nationalities during her counselling career.
Consequently, Kathleen understands the difference in relationship structures that might exist between different cultures and is able to help people from all places to improve the quality of their relationship through face-to-face couples counselling in Newcastle.

Kathleen Whelan (Couples Counsellor & Psychotherapist) is registered with the British Association for Counselling Psychotherapy (BACP) and is a senior accredited member of the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society (NCPS).
Kathleen offers face-to-face appointments at the main clinic in Gosforth (Newcastle Psychologist & Counselling at the Regent Centre).
Online therapy using Skype, Facetime, Zoom & WhatsApp Video is also available.
