About Dr Steven Mayers (Clinical Psychologist)
Dr Steven Mayers is one of the Clinical Psychologists here at Newcastle Psychologist & Counselling. He specialises in providing integrative psychotherapy for those with a wide range of mental health issues, helping them to reduce their distress and achieve their potential.
Steven integrates a range of approaches within his practice to help people suffering from a range of problems to overcome their difficulties, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Psychodynamic Therapy, and Systemic (Family Therapy) Psychotherapy.
With years of experience as a psychologist within the UK and in Australia, Steven has worked across a diverse range of areas, helping people within mental health, physical health and social care settings.
Experienced Clinical Psychologist
Following his undergraduate degree in Psychology at the University of Liverpool, Steven completed his Masters in Psychological Research Methods at Birkbeck College, University of London, before receiving his Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of Leeds.
He has extensive experience working in a number of contexts with a variety of service user groups and professional teams – spanning mental health, physical health and social care settings in the UK and Australia.
After spending six years living in Sydney, Steven has recently moved back to the UK. During his time in Australia, he completed ongoing research, published a book for aspiring clinical psychologists, and established independent practice as a psychologist helping people overcome problems such as depression, anxiety, psychosis, and alcohol and drug problems.
He has also facilitated numerous forums for members of local communities to come together in order to discuss various topics from a psychological perspective.
Therapeutic Approach
Over the past 20 years, Steven has developed an approach to therapy which is grounded in authenticity and empathy.
Steven doesn’t believe that people fit into boxes or can be reduced to labels and will meet with anyone regardless of how their distress manifests or what they’re struggling with, working with them to reduce their distress and enable them to achieve their potential.
Whilst growing up, psychology was a way for Steven to make sense of the things that were happening around him. When he began to train clinically, he learnt how to apply these ideas to the experiences in a person’s life.
In addition to his work as a clinical psychologist, Steven is also a competitive cyclist and competed at the Australian National Championships in 2021 and 2022.

Dr Steven Mayers (Clinical Psychologist) is registered with The Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) in the UK, and the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
