About Dr Charlotte Adams (Clinical Psychologist)

Dr Charlotte Adams is one of the Online Clinical Psychologists at Newcastle Psychologist & Counselling.  She specialises in working with people who feel low in mood, difficulties with anxiety, self-esteem or identity, and those who have had difficult past experiences.

Charlotte is experienced in providing Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), as well as newer therapies such as Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) and Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT).

In addition to this, she is also trained in systemic models and ways of working – these include family and couples therapy.  This allows Charlotte to work with those close to her clients if the client wishes, for example partners, friends or family members, in order to support wellbeing.

Rather than working through a diagnostic framework, Charlotte works with her clients to help them to understand themselves better in their own words, and help them develop coping strategies to improve their difficulties.

Experienced Clinical Psychologist

Charlotte has extensive experience in working with adults suffering from a range of problems and mental health difficulties across different settings.

During her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at the University of Hull, Charlotte’s clinical placements included a learning disability community mental health team, paediatric diabetes team, psychiatric liaison team, an early intervention in psychosis team, and within clinical health psychology.

Since qualifying in 2020, Charlotte has worked within an Early Intervention in Psychosis service, helping her develop a range of skills to help people with complex difficulties.  As a result, Charlotte is skilled in working with a range of problems, especially where there may be other complex factors contributing to the problem.

Consequently, Charlotte is able to help people experiencing difficulties with depression, anxiety, hearing voices, health anxiety, OCD, pain and physical health problems and even addictions.

Background in Psychology

Charlotte’s interest in psychology started at an early age, through watching documentaries and having a strong interest in people and why they do what they do. This led her into a psychology degree, followed by a doctorate in clinical psychology.

She loves working with people and supporting them to find ways forward during times of distress. Charlotte also has a strong interest in understanding how societal difficulties and expectations, such as racism, feminism, financial inequality, affect mental health and how these can be used to understand distress.

As well as her passion for psychology, Charlotte enjoys being outdoors and going for walks, particularly around lakes and reservoirs. She also likes reading, playing netball (and getting competitive!), and travelling to new places around the world.
