About Matt Scandle (Sports Psychologist)
Matt Scandle is a dedicated Sport & Performance Psychologist at Newcastle Psychologist & Counselling, specialising in helping athletes and performers enhance both their performance and psychological well-being.
Matt provides sports psychology services for athletes aged 14 and above, supporting individuals, teams, coaches, and performance staff across a range of sporting and performance domains.
His work focuses on helping performers develop the mental skills and mindset required to thrive under pressure, manage setbacks, and perform consistently at their best, both in competition and in training.
Sports Psychologist Newcastle
Matt has spent the last five years working as a Sport and Performance Psychologist across a variety of professional sport settings, at the same time as completing his professional doctorate.
He has provided psychological support to athletes, coaches, parents, and performance staff, helping them optimise performance while maintaining mental well-being.
Having worked with Carlisle United, Sunderland Girls Academy, and Durham Cricket team, Matt’s experience spans a wide range of sporting organisations and performance environments, giving him a deep understanding of the mental demands placed on athletes at different stages of their careers.
His approach is both collaborative and evidence-based, empowering athletes to connect with their values, embrace challenges, and perform with purpose.
Background in Sports Psychology
Matt’s path into sport psychology was driven by his own love of sport and his experiences as a club-level cricketer, where he first encountered the psychological challenges of competition.
He holds an MSc in Sport and Exercise Psychology and a BSc in Psychology with Sports Science, and continues to advance his expertise through doctoral research and applied practice.
Matt has worked with a range of profession football and cricket teams and can offer expertise in any area of sport and performance.
His work is grounded in his passion for helping others understand the mental side of performance, and his belief that every athlete, regardless of level, can benefit from learning how to train their mind as well as their body.
Registered with Professional Bodies
Matt’s work focuses on building psychological flexibility, helping performers develop the ability to stay focused and composed in the face of challenge, uncertainty, or high pressure; key qualities that support both short-term success and long-term growth.
His curiosity about how the mind impacts performance led him to study Sport and Exercise Psychology, ultimately developing into a career dedicated to helping others realise their full potential.
Using psychologically informed interventions grounded in Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and influenced by existential approaches, Matt helps clients cultivate resilience, focus, and confidence in their performance.
