Whether you are experiencing difficulties in your relationship or simply want to understand your partner better, speaking with one of our specialist relationship counsellors in Newcastle can make a meaningful difference.

At Newcastle Psychologist & Counselling, relationship counselling and couples therapy are available to anyone, regardless of relationship type or arrangement.

Whether you are married, cohabiting, separated, or in a new relationship, our counsellors provide a safe, confidential space in which to work through what is troubling you. We welcome couples and individuals of all backgrounds, including LGBTQ+ clients.

Our specialist couples and relationship counsellors are also trained marriage counsellors and understand the specific challenges that married couples might face. Marriage counselling is therefore available alongside our couples counselling services.

Couples Therapy Newcastle

Our couples therapy service is built around one core principle: that relationships, however difficult things may feel right now, can change. Working with an experienced couples therapist gives you and your partner the opportunity to explore what is happening between you and begin to address it together.

People come to us for many different reasons. Some seek couples therapy in Newcastle because communication has broken down or arguments have become frequent. Others come following a specific event such as an affair or a betrayal of trust, and want help working through the impact.

Some couples attend when they are considering separation, or need support managing the practicalities of a break-up where children are involved. Whatever brings you to us, our therapists will not take sides or offer judgement.

What Can Couples Counselling Help With?

Our couples counselling in Newcastle draws on evidence-based approaches including systemic therapy and cognitive behavioural principles. Your counsellor will work with you to understand the patterns that have developed in how you communicate, how you manage conflict, and how your individual histories may be shaping the relationship.

Relationship difficulties often have roots in early attachment experiences, long-standing communication habits, or unresolved individual difficulties brought into the relationship. Our counsellors are trained to work across all of these areas. Couples counselling can help with:

  • Frequent arguing or communication difficulties
  • Affairs, infidelity, and rebuilding trust
  • Jealousy and insecurity
  • Emotional distance or loss of intimacy
  • Improving sexual relationships & performance
  • Attachment and dependency issues
  • Parenting disagreements or co-parenting arrangements
  • Separation, divorce, and adjustment following relationship breakdown

We also support individuals attending on their own, either because a partner is unwilling to attend, or because the relationship has ended and you need support to rebuild.

Couples Therapy Newcastle

If you have not attended relationship counselling before, it is natural to feel uncertain about what is involved. The first session is primarily an opportunity for your counsellor to understand your situation and for you to get a sense of how they work. There is no pressure to disclose more than you are comfortable with.

Most couples attend sessions together, though individual sessions can be arranged alongside joint work where appropriate. Sessions with our specialist relationship counsellors typically last 50 minutes and are held weekly or fortnightly, depending on your needs.

Relationship & Marriage Counselling FAQs

What is relationship counselling?

Relationship counselling is a structured, therapeutic process in which a trained counsellor helps individuals or couples explore and address difficulties within a relationship.

It provides a safe, non-judgemental space to improve communication, resolve conflict, and develop a greater understanding of yourself and your partner. It can be used to work through a specific problem, improve a strained relationship, or navigate an ending with as little distress as possible.

Is relationship counselling the same as couples therapy?

The terms are used interchangeably, and at Newcastle Psychologist & Counselling, there is no meaningful distinction between them.

You may also encounter the terms marriage counselling or marriage guidance, which describe the same type of support applied specifically to married couples. Our therapists are trained across all of these modalities and will tailor their approach to your situation.

Do both partners need to attend?

Not necessarily. While joint sessions are often the most effective format, individual relationship counselling can be equally valuable, particularly when one partner is not ready to engage or when the relationship has ended. We will discuss the most appropriate format with you at the point of referral.

How long does couples counselling take?

This varies depending on the nature of the difficulties and what you are hoping to achieve. Some clients benefit from a focused course of six to eight sessions; others find longer-term work more appropriate. Your counsellor will review progress with you regularly.

Do you offer online couples therapy?

Yes. In addition to in-person sessions at our Newcastle practice, we offer online relationship counselling and couples therapy via video call, available to clients across the North East including Durham, Gateshead, South Shields, Northumberland, and North Tyneside.
