About Dr Caítriona Collins (Clinical Psychologist)
Dr Caítriona (pronounced “Ka-trina”) Collins is one of our experienced Clinical Psychologists at Newcastle Psychologist & Counselling, providing specialist assessment and therapy for adults experiencing a range of psychological and emotional difficulties.
She works with individuals presenting with anxiety, depression, trauma, sleep problems, and chronic stress, as well as those struggling with adjustment, self-esteem, and relationship challenges.
Caítriona also has considerable experience in supporting people with physical health difficulties, particularly chronic pain, helping clients to understand and manage the emotional impact of living with long-term health conditions.
She has a special interest in perinatal mental health, offering compassionate and effective support for those who have experienced birth trauma, neonatal trauma, or the challenges of early parenthood.
Experienced Clinical Psychologist for Adults
Caítriona is a Senior Clinical Psychologist with over 12 years of experience working across a variety of adult NHS services. Her background includes supporting adults experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, and PTSD, as well as helping those coping with the psychological aspects of physical illness.
She has developed a broad and diverse clinical background, having worked across learning disability, forensic, adult, and paediatric mental and physical health services.
This experience has equipped her with the insight and flexibility to work effectively with people from all walks of life, adapting her approach to suit each client’s circumstances.
In addition to her clinical work, Caítriona is actively involved in psychological research, focusing on topics including unusual sensory experiences, chronic pain, bullying, and women’s health conditions such as endometriosis and menstrual problems.
Her research experience helps her stay informed of the latest developments in psychology and ensure her clinical practice is grounded in evidence and innovation.
Therapeutic Approach
Caítriona’s therapeutic approach is warm, collaborative, and integrative, combining the most effective evidence-based therapies with a focus on understanding each client’s personal story.
She draws upon a range of evidence-based therapeutic approaches, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), tailoring therapy to each person’s unique needs.
Caítriona works from the belief that emotional and physical health are deeply connected, and therapy should address both in order to foster genuine wellbeing and recovery.
Her sessions provide a safe, non-judgemental space for clients to explore their difficulties, build self-understanding, and develop the tools needed to move forward with confidence and self-compassion.
Personal Journey to Psychology
Caítriona’s decision to pursue a career in psychology stemmed from a longstanding interest in mental health and human behaviour.
During her clinical training, she became particularly fascinated by how mental and physical health interact, which inspired her to specialise in health psychology, trauma, and chronic pain.
Outside of her clinical and research work, Caítriona enjoys spending time outdoors with her two young sons, going for walks, and visiting her family in Ireland.
She is passionate about helping clients understand their experiences, and make positive changes that improve both their emotional and physical wellbeing.
