EMDR - Eye Movement Desensitisation And Reprocessing Therapy in Newcastle
EMDR Therapy Newcastle
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a relatively new therapy that helps people overcome difficult feelings, memories and emotions.
EMDR uses eye movements, hand tapping and audio stimulation to help people process and overcome their difficult experiences. It is a structured therapy based on findings from neuroscience and other forms of psychotherapy about how we process and respond to memories.
At Newcastle Psychologist & Counselling, we offer EMDR as an alternative approach for those that think they would find talking therapy difficult, or have experienced a significant trauma that they are struggling to process.
EMDR in Newcastle - How Does it Work?
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) works with problems in a different way from traditional talking therapies (such as Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance & Commitment Therapy or Compassion Focused Therapy), which often involve discussing your problems with a therapist and working through them verbally.
EMDR is thought to work through encouraging bilateral stimulation of the brain, which comes from accessing memories while making specific sequences of movement with the eyes, and experiencing certain tapping sequences and/or sounds.
By doing this, EMDR helps to activate parts of your brain that are responsible for memory processing (including the amygdala, hippocampus and prefrontal cortex) to help reprocess the memory in real time and unhook from the negative emotion attached to it so that you are able to feel calmer and overcome your difficult experiences.
When delivered by trained therapists, EMDR can alter the way your brain responds to distressing memories and help reduce the fight, flight or freeze responses connected to them so that you are no longer subject to being stuck in “survival mode” and are able to function better in day to day life.
What Problems Does EMDR Help With?
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a proven therapy to deal with problems related to difficult and painful memories that can occur with trauma and PTSD.
It is particularly effective for and can help deal with problems relating to:
- Neglect, bullying, or abuse
- Difficult childhood memories
- Processing the effects of road traffic and car accidents
- Overcoming experiences of military combat
- Difficulties with past verbal, physical or sexual assault or abuse
- Memories of domestic violence and relationship difficulties
- Trauma from medical procedures (including surgery, dentistry or medical investigations)
There is growing evidence that EMDR can also help with difficulties related to anxiety, depression, eating disorders, grief and loss, nightmares, and intrusive thoughts if due to past traumatic experience.
