Counselling for OCD in Newcastle

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a condition characterised by frequent obsessive or intrusive thoughts (such as dwelling or rumination) and compulsive behaviours which often lead to the need to repeat actions, such as checking, cleaning, or doing things a certain number of times.

Many people with OCD also experience distressing intrusive thoughts about hurting others, themselves or other anxiety provoking images or thoughts.

If you are having trouble with OCD and are struggling with unwanted thoughts or distressing intrusive images entering your mind, or you can’t stop yourself compulsively repeating behaviours (such as checking), our team of OCD therapists and psychologists at Newcastle Psychologist & Counselling can help.

It isn’t always clear what causes OCD, but several factors are thought to play a part, including:

  • Life events – some OCD suffered develop the condition as a result of trauma, neglect, abuse, bullying, childbirth or bereavement.
  • Family members with OCD – you are more likely to develop OCD if a family member has it (though this does not mean that it is genetic).
  • Experiences growing up – many people with OCD might have experienced strict parents leading to feelings that things have to be right or done a certain way.
  • Difficulty with anxiety – people with anxiety might be more likely to experience intrusive thoughts, and OCD.
  • Personality traits – some people are naturally meticulous and methodical or have high levels of anxiety, which can make OCD more likely (for example, perfectionism is related strongly with OCD).
