Trauma doesn’t just live in the past; it can shape how we think, feel, and respond to the world every day. For many, painful memories remain locked in the mind and body, resurfacing as anxiety, flashbacks, or emotional numbness.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) therapy offers a way to gently unlock those memories and reprocess them, helping people find relief, resilience, and a renewed sense of control.

Here at Newcastle Psychologist & Counselling, we offer EMDR in Newcastle, providing individuals with lasting relief from trauma and emotional distress.

What is EMDR Therapy?

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured therapeutic approach that helps the brain reprocess traumatic memories in a more adaptive way.

It uses bilateral stimulation, often through guided eye movements or tapping, while clients focus on distressing memories. This process helps reduce the emotional charge associated with those memories and supports the brain in forming healthier associations.

Although the exact mechanism is still being researched, EMDR is backed by numerous clinical studies and is recommended by both the NHS and the World Health Organisation (WHO), as an effective treatment for trauma and PTSD.

Why EMDR Works for Trauma & Other Issues

Trauma can leave the brain ‘stuck’, causing memories to remain unprocessed and easily triggered. EMDR allows individuals to revisit these memories in a safe, controlled environment, helping them to reduce their emotional impact and reframe negative beliefs.

As the therapy progresses, people often find they feel less overwhelmed, more in control of their emotions, and better able to function in daily life. It’s a structured yet flexible approach that can be tailored to each person’s needs and readiness.

While originally focused on PTSD, EMDR is now helping people overcome a wider range of challenges, including anxiety, grief, childhood trauma, and negative self-esteem.
