About Dr Amber Taylor (Child & Adult Psychologist)
Dr Amber Taylor is one of our Clinical Psychologists at Newcastle Psychologist & Counselling, offering therapeutic support for both children and adults across a broad range of psychological difficulties.
Amber provides compassionate and evidence-based support for issues including anxiety, OCD, low mood, trauma, specific phobias, school avoidance in children, and difficulties following bereavement or health changes in adults and children.
Her specialist focus includes helping children, young people and families to understand and manage anxiety, as well as supporting individuals adjusting to significant life changes, and Amber also offers parenting support and guidance for families navigating emotional and behavioural challenges.
Amber’s calm and reassuring style allows clients of all ages to feel safe and understood so that both children and adults receive the best help she can provide.
Clinical Psychologist for Children and Adults
Amber is trained in a wide range of therapeutic models, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Systemic Family Therapy and Psychodynamic Therapy.
She also integrates elements of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), tailoring her approach to best suit the needs and goals of each individual or family she supports.
She has worked extensively across NHS and educational settings, with experience in paediatric services, mental health teams (both community and crisis), schools, and physical health services (such as neurorehabilitation, chronic pain and respiratory care).
In her former role as a Senior Clinical Psychologist in the NHS, Amber helped develop an early intervention mental health service for children in specialist schools—offering therapy, consultation, parent support, and staff supervision.
Alongside her clinical work, she continues to support future psychologists as an Associate Clinical Tutor on a Doctoral Clinical Psychology training programme.
Qualified & Experienced Child Psychologist
Amber holds a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of Surrey (2019), and is a registered Clinical Psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
Her qualifications also include a Postgraduate Certificate in Low Intensity CBT (UCL), Postgraduate Diploma in Mental Health Practice (Middlesex University), and a BSc in Psychology from the University of Exeter.
She has further completed training in ACT for adolescents, Compassion-Focused Therapy, Positive Behaviour Support, and working with neurodivergent children and young people.
Her commitment to continued professional development ensures her work is grounded in up-to-date, evidence-based practice.
Passionate About Supporting Mental Health
Amber’s interest in psychology and emotional development began early and was deepened during her academic studies. Although initially drawn to neuropsychology, her clinical experiences led her to pursue a more therapeutic path; one that has allowed her to make a tangible difference in the lives of individuals and families.
Amber also has a research interest in the self-perception of autistic girls, and has published research on peer support within mental health services. She also finds great reward in seeing people grow, heal, and take meaningful steps forward, often in the face of adversity.
Away from her clinical work, Amber enjoys family life with her two young children, staying active through running, and winding down with knitting. She recently completed the Great North Run in support of a local charity, combining her love of running with a cause close to her heart.
Her approachable, kind nature helps to put clients at ease, creating a warm and supportive space where meaningful change can begin.
