About Paul Grimmer (CBT / EMDR Therapist)

Paul is one of our specialist CBT Therapists at Newcastle Psychologist & Counselling, who provides CBT therapy, EMDR, and psychotherapy for adults who are struggling with a range of emotional and psychological distress.

Paul specialises in working with trauma, including difficulties related to childhood trauma, such as neglect, abuse, abandonment and loss.

Linked to, Paul has a passion for, and is highly effective in working with, those often struggle with shame and self-criticism, rejection and feel somehow different or disconnected from themselves, other people and world.

Integrative CBT Therapist

As a psychotherapist with 15 years of experience, Paul offers a non-judgemental space to explore difficulties with compassion and sensitivity.

Paul’s approach to therapy is trauma and attachment informed, placing client experiences at the heart of therapy, and helping you to overcome the difficulties that might arise from them.

Working in an integrated way, Paul blends therapeutic approaches including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) and mind-body connection approaches together.

This allows Paul to help you work through your difficulties in a safe and compassionate environment, and to feel supported during your therapy together.

Qualifications and Experience

Paul initially trained as an Occupational Therapist at Northumbria University and worked within the NHS in this role for several years before training to become a CBT Therapist in Newcastle.

In his CBT Therapist role, Paul has worked in a range of NHS settings including forensic services, primary care psychotherapy and the specialist veteran’s complex trauma service.

Most recently, Paul worked as a Senior Psychological Therapist in a specialist talking therapy service in Newcastle, where he provided trauma informed and attachment focused therapy and training for other professionals.

Background in Psychotherapy

Even in his early days working as an artist and coordinator for national and international arts events, Paul was involved in helping people with their mental health.

During this time, Paul volunteered as a mentor and facilitator supporting survivors of trauma through expressive arts and helping them overcome difficulties with their mood, anxiety and other problems.

Following his work in helping those with mental health difficulties, Paul decided to change career and train as an occupational therapist and subsequently a CBT Therapist.

Outside of work, Paul is kept busy as a dad and dog dad, and enjoys getting outside for walks and adventures whenever possible. He also spends time practising yoga and mindfulness, as well as pottering in the garden to help balance out busier times.

Registered with Professional Bodies

Paul Grimmer (CBT Therapist) is registered with the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP) and the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC), and is also in the process of working towards EMDR Practitioner Accreditation with EMDR UK.

Paul offers face-to-face appointments at the main clinic in Gosforth (Newcastle Psychologist & Counselling at the Regent Centre), as well as online appointments using Skype, Facetime, Zoom & WhatsApp Video.
