About Carolyn Thompson (Couples and Marriage Counsellor)
Carolyn Thompson is one of our experienced couples and marriage counsellors at Newcastle Psychologist & Counselling, offering support to individuals and couples navigating relationship challenges.
With 19 years of counselling experience, she specialises in relationship counselling, helping couples to communicate better, understand each other’s needs, and overcome difficulties in their relationship or marriage.
Carolyn takes an integrative approach, drawing on person-centred, psychodynamic, and systemic methods to tailor her counselling to each couple’s unique circumstances.
She frequently incorporates attachment theory into her work, helping clients to explore how past experiences affect their current relationships, enabling them to break unhelpful patterns and foster healthier communication.
Experienced Couples Counsellor
Carolyn’s journey in relationship counselling began with training at Relate, where she gained significant experience working with couples and individuals.
After her time at Relate, Carolyn spent 12 years as a Practice Counsellor in the NHS, before establishing her own private practice 5 years ago.
Over the course of her career, Carolyn has consistently worked with both couples and individuals, with a focus on resolving relationship difficulties as well as a number of other issues and difficulties.
Person-Centred Approach to Relationship Counselling
In her work, Carolyn places a strong emphasis on listening, understanding, and helping couples to rebuild trust and communication.
She integrates different therapeutic approaches based on the couple’s needs, with a foundation in person-centred counselling which she integrates to help people overcome their relationship difficulties and move forward in spite of any problems.
By combining this with psychodynamic and systemic models, Carolyn helps couples explore their deeper emotional patterns, creating opportunities for healing and growth while bringing the relationship back into it’s helpful place.
Passion for Supporting Relationships
Carolyn’s passion for human relationships and communication led her to pursue a career in counselling and working with relationships.
She has always been interested in the art of listening and the way humans relate to one another, but it was seeing people in her life that were struggling in their relationships and wanting to be of more help, which drew her to train as a counsellor with Relate.
Carolyn has also brought her love for art into her relationship and family counselling work, co-facilitating an art therapy project called “Room for You,” which provided emotional support to cancer patients and their families at the Northern Centre for Cancer Care.
When not counselling, Carolyn enjoys Autumn and walking in the great outdoors, particularly in the Lake District, and spending time with her grandchildren.
