About Sarah Parker (Child Counsellor)
Sarah Parker is one of our skilled Child Counsellors at Newcastle Psychologist & Counselling, bringing experience in trauma-informed practice for children and young people spanning primary and secondary school age.
She is an integrative practitioner, combining a client-led approach with a passion for creative intervention in arts and play therapy to engage her young clients.
Sarah works with young people experiencing a range of problems including anxiety, self-harm, childhood bullying, school avoidance, domestic violence and trauma, LGBTQIA+ counselling and those in the care of the local authority, with respect to the unique challenges they face.
Sarah offers an approach based on consistency and stability, establishing the counselling room as a grounded place of safety where children and young people can feel comfortable expressing themselves to help them work through their difficulties.
Counsellor for Children & Young People
Sarah comes from a creative background, retraining from an Illustration degree to achieve her counselling qualification after deciding that the most interesting thing about art is the human psychological drive behind it.
She believes in the power of creative expression to access the subconscious and how it can be a source of long-term deep healing for children, whether that is through structured counselling or spontaneous play.
Sarah worked for two years as a counsellor in school settings which provided her experience in counselling children and young people with a multitude of complex difficulties, high standards of safeguarding, and respect for client confidentiality.
This experience also provided Sarah with insight into the multidisciplinary available services for children and young people throughout the Tyne and Wear region to help support the work she does inside the counselling room.
Personal Journey to Counselling
After completing her degree in illustration, Sarah decided she wanted to pursue a path that was more people-focused and help understand people more fully.
She has always been fascinated by the link between the arts and mental wellbeing, and retrained during the pandemic as a Child Counsellor.
Sarah remains a keen visual artist, and continues her creativity inside and outside of the counselling room through her interest in fantasy and animals. She also frequently enjoys running to maintain her own mental wellbeing and provide the best service she can for her clients.
