About Sarah Parker (Child Counsellor)
Sarah Parker is a child counsellor with experience in trauma-informed practice with children and young people spanning primary and secondary school age. She’s an integrative practitioner, combining a person-centred, client-led approach with a passion for creative intervention in arts and play therapy. Sarah works with young people with autism and ADHD, with an awareness of how a counselling approach may be adapted to a neurodiverse person’s individual needs. She’s also worked with young people experiencing anxiety, self-harm, emotionally-based school avoidance, domestic violence and trauma, LGBT youth and those in the care of the local authority with respect to the unique challenges they face.
Sarah offers a long-term approach based on a foundation of consistency and stability, to establish the counselling room as a grounded place of safety where children and young people can feel comfortable expressing themselves.
Psychologist for Children & Young People
Sarah comes from a creative background, retraining from an Illustration degree to achieve a counselling qualification after deciding that the most interesting thing about art is the human psychological drive behind it. She really believes in the power of creative expression to access the unconscious and be a source of deep healing and self-understanding, whether that is through more structured artistic pursuits or spontaneous play.
The two years of experience as a counsellor in school settings, provided me with experience in a multitude of presenting issues and an acute awareness of the importance of maintaining high standards of safeguarding balanced with a respect for client confidentiality, as well as providing me with insight into multidisciplinary services for children and young people in the Tyne and Wear region.
Personal Journey to Psychology
After completing an Illustration degree, Sarah decided she wanted to pursue a path that was more people-focused and had a drive to understand people more fully. “I have always been fascinated by the link between the arts and mental wellbeing, and during the pandemic I retrained in counselling with an interest in a person-centred creative approach.”
She’s also a keen visual artist, with an interest in fantasy and animals, and frequently enjoys running to maintain her own mental wellbeing.
