How to Get the Most Out of Your Online Therapy Sessions

Online therapy has made professional mental health support more accessible than ever, but simply logging on isn’t enough to get the most from it. Like any form of therapy, what you put in shapes what you get out. A few small adjustments to how you approach your sessions can make a significant difference to how comfortable, focused, and productive they feel.

At Newcastle Psychologist & Counselling, we offer online therapy sessions with our experienced team of psychologists, counsellors, and CBT therapists, helping you access the right support from wherever you are.

Choose the Right Space

Where you sit for your session matters more than most people anticipate. Ideally, you want somewhere private, quiet, and free from interruptions for the duration of your appointment.

If you share a home with others, let them know you need that time undisturbed. Using headphones can help with both sound quality and the sense of privacy, making it easier to speak openly without worrying about being overheard.

Treat It Like a Real Appointment

It’s easy for online therapy sessions to blur into the rest of your day, particularly if you’re working from home. Try to build a small ritual around your appointment, whether that’s making a drink beforehand, closing other tabs, or taking five minutes of quiet before you log on.

Arriving mentally present rather than distracted makes a noticeable difference to how engaged you feel throughout the session.

Be Honest About How the Format Feels

If something about the online format isn’t working for you, tell your therapist. Perhaps the connection feels impersonal, or you find it harder to open up on camera. A good therapist will work with you to address this, and raising it directly is far more useful than quietly disengaging. The therapeutic relationship works just as well online as in person, but it still needs tending.

Give Yourself Time Afterwards

Therapy can bring up a lot, and finishing a session then immediately jumping into a meeting or school run doesn’t give you space to process what’s been discussed. Where possible, build in even fifteen minutes of quiet time after your appointment.
