About Michael Atkinson (Mindfulness Meditation Teacher)
Michael is our Specialist Mindfulness and Meditation Teacher at Newcastle Psychologist & Counselling.
He specialises in helping people learn mindfulness and to incorporate mindfulness meditation into their life for improved mental health, greater enjoyment of life, and even relapse prevention for those having suffered from depression, anxiety, and a variety of other problems.
Michael is experienced in teaching various forms of mindfulness and meditation to individuals and groups for personal development and for therapeutic benefit at our clinic in Newcastle upon Tyne.
Trained Mindfulness Meditation Teacher
Michael is an experienced and trained mindfulness teacher with years of practice in helping people improve quality of life through mindfulness and meditation. He helps people incorporate mindfulness into day to day life, and helps overcome problems with depression, anxiety and other difficulties using mindfulness approaches.
Having studied mindfulness for over 20 years, Michael also attended formal Mindfulness Teacher Training with Mindfulness CIC in Leicester in 2017.
At present, Michael is also currently training to become a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) teacher and practitioner, which is a specialist form of mindfulness that helps people help manage and overcome stress.
He often uses his skills to prevent or support clients from experiencing relapse after through therapy or counselling with other therapists, or to support the work of our team at Newcastle Psychologist & Counselling.
Michael graduated in Philosophy from Newcastle University in 2004, and gained a Post Graduate Certificate in Compulsory Education and Training from the University of Sunderland (2005) and a Masters in Advancing Pedagogy from the University of Sunderland (2011) which helps him apply teaching principles to help clients in their Mindfulness journey.
Michael has a colourful history of teaching mindfulness in Newcastle and online, and helps individuals, families and organisations from a diverse range of backgrounds to develop mindfulness and coping skills, and improve wellbeing through mindfulness and meditation.
He has extensive experience of working with other mental health and mindfulness practitioners, and currently provides one to one and group mindfulness sessions for us at Newcastle Psychologist & Counselling. He also collaborates on relapse prevention work with clients seen by our team of psychologists, counsellors and therapists in Newcastle.
Michael holds a national role as Chair of the Mindfulness in Medical Education Special Interest Group for the Association of Studies into Medical Education (ASME) and is a Senior Fellow with Advance HE. Michael also features regularly on Radio Tyneside’s Morning Mindfulness programme.
Outside of work, Michael enjoys playing tennis and spending time with his family at their coastal home.

Michael is a a Senior Fellow with AdvanceHE (formerly known as the Higher Education Academy) and a member of the Association of Studies into Medical Education (ASME).
Michael offers face-to-face appointments at the main clinic in Gosforth (Newcastle Psychologist & Counselling at the Regent Centre) and also in Jesmond (Fleming Business Centre).
Online mindfulness and mindfulness meditation training with Michael is also available using Skype, Facetime, Zoom & WhatsApp Video.
